Oh, the train wrecks! The beautiful train wrecks!
When I was in college, my radio buddy Mike Adams and I used to host a show on WOCR-FM called "Culture Shock." We would take turns picking the next song, each of us trying to create a worse train wreck than the one before. While this list doesn't include both AC/DC's "Back in Black" and Tevye singing "If I Were a Rich Man" (as our show did one night), it comes close, sporting both "Chariots of Fire" by Vangelis and "Tipsy" by J-Kwon. Gotta love it.
My favorite in this 50-song segment has to be Carly Simon's spectacular "Nobody Does It Better," a #2-peaking hit from the fall of 1977. It has it all: a silky voice, suckerpunch chords, actual dynamic level shifts, and that steamy, sexy, James Bond connection. But Eve's "Gangsta Lovin'" is also pretty darn amazing for completely different, train-wrecked reasons.
