I met Travis Freeman in the Rupert town square in the summer of 1979. We were six years old. We immediately discovered our common love of Star Wars, and then we were inseparable for the next seven years, until my family moved away.
Today we met again in that same square, wandered all over town sharing memories with my wife and daughter, and ate lunch at Doc's Pizza, one of my favorite early '80s hangouts.
When there's someone you haven't seen in a long time, it's easy to wonder what you still have in common. Is the past the only place you can find common ground? Thankfully, that worry was dispelled in the first few minutes of our conversation. Sure, we shared lots of memories -- and told different versions of the ones we had in common -- but we also talked a lot about today. Thank God, this is a friendship that can and will continue.
