My friend Katrina tells me she’s making a YouTube playlist of all 1,000 of these hits. Is such a thing transferable to other computer users, Katrina?

Well, in this 50-song chunk, we have pop gem “Kiss Me” from Sixpence None the Richer, Queen’s rockabilly anthem “Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” and Elton John’s classic “Crocodile Rock.” We have Kris Kross, who are in their 30s by now, and Minnie Riperton, may she rest in peace.

We have love songs and breakup songs and starting over again songs. We have dance songs, including the earliest song I ever remember hearing on the radio: “(Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty.” And we have embarrassing moments in pop music history, like “Kung Fu Fighting.”

A top 1000 is pretty extreme. Is a top 300 more manageable? That's what we have left. So what's in this segment?

Well, my favorite one is the Pet Shop Boys' "West End Girls" -- it's full of that menacing, someone-is-chasing-you '80s energy. And from the same spring, Prince's ultra-funky "Kiss." Natasha Bedingfield's "Unwritten" is a more recent great, and we kick it old school with Billy Paul and "Me and Mrs. Jones."

As we get ever closer to the biggest hit of my particular lifetime, you’ll notice some of the cheesier, perhaps better forgotten songs coming up: “We Built This City,” for instance, or Mariah Carey’s “Hero.”

You may feel a guilty surge of pleasure if you go to YouTube and track down “Informer” by Snow, or “I Think We’re Alone Now” by Tiffany. Or even “My Humps” by the Black Eyed Peas. Or “Ghostbusters”!

But for my money, you have no reason at all to be ashamed of adoring Tears for Fears’ “Everybody Wants to Rule the World.” Certainly I’m not ashamed to call myself a fan. The same goes for “Stay (I Missed You)” by Lisa Loeb & Nine Stories.
